Social Responsibility
I slept and dreamed that life was joy,
I awoke and saw that life was service,
I acted, and behold, service was joy
Rabindranath Tagore
This year at LUMUN’08, in an effort to genuinely actualize the ideals of ‘peace’, ‘harmony’, ‘responsibility’ and ‘compromise’ celebrated by a Mock- UN simulation, we bring to you the Social Responsibility Department. The aim of this department will be to provide the biggest gathering of the most bright and talented individuals in South-Asia, a platform to share their unique abilities with the community around them.
We have invited to LUMUN’08 three of the most active and established civil societies of our country i.e. Care Foundation, Kashf Foundation and Edhi Foundation, working in various respects to empower the underprivileged of Pakistan:
Care, since 1988, has taken upon itself the ambitious goal of illiteracy alleviation; and believes that quality education is the answer to national prosperity. Care is currently managing 183 schools in Pakistan, with a student body of 117,000. 25,000 students have completed Matriculation from CARE schools and 430 CARE students are on CARE scholarship Programme, pursuing higher education.

Established in 1996, Kashf, which means ‘self-discovery’, is the first Microfinance institute of Pakistan. With its special focus on women empowerment, it aims to free low income households from the shackles of poverty by providing them cost effective micro-finance to expand their economic role and decision making capacity.

Established with a mere Rs. 5000, a one-man show operating from a single room in Karachi, is now the Edhi Foundation ,the largest welfare organization in Pakistan. The foundation has over 300 centers across the country, in big cities, small towns and remote rural areas, providing medical aid, family planning and emergency assistance. The Edhi Foundation is the first of its kind in South Asia that owns air ambulances, providing quick access to far-flung areas. These organizations will share their efforts, experiences, successes as well as roadblocks with the delegates and show them avenues of how to become part of their noble missions.
